New lotus necklaces on KBlossoms!

12/5/2010

Kblossoms has just released beautiful gold and silver lotus flower necklaces!  You can now purchase them on www.kblossoms.etsy.com.  The lotus symbolizes the purity of the heart and mind and can help calm the mind in meditation.  The lotus flower grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom beautifully, untouched by the impurities of the dirt and mud in the water.  At night the lotus closes and sinks underwater and it rises and opens again at dawn.
The lotus is associated with creation, the afterlife, enlightenment, fertility and sensuality, purity, and health in various cultures.  In Indian culture, the lotus flower represents enlightenment, wealth, knowledge, and connection to the divine. It is often associated with the goddess of wealth Maha Lakshmi, who represents purity, prosperity and generosity. She sits on a fully blossomed lotus flower.  In Egypt, the lotus flower is called Sesen and is a symbol of the sun, creation and rebirth.  The Buddha statue is often found meditating with a lotus flower or sitting on a lotus blossom.  According to Buddhist teachings, the heart of a person who has not attained enlightenment is the embodiment of a lotus that has not blossomed yet.  Once the person has reached enlightenment, their heart becomes a lotus in full bloom.  The lotus is known to help in meditation by calming the mind and improving concentration.  When combined with crystals, it is very powerful in its effect.  Lotus is also an excellent elixir for balancing, cleansing, and strengthening the aura.

Red Cherry Blossom Branch Paper Cut Painting

12/1/2010

Materials Used: Acrylic, Japanese rice paper, origami paper, Swarovski crystals on wood.
Original Size: 18"x24"
Price for Original: $275
Description of Red Cherry Blossom Branch Paper Cut Painting
This is my version of a mixed medium cherry blossom branch painting.  I experimented with paper cuts of cherry blossoms on Japanese rice paper and origami paper.  The blue backdrop and light beige branch was painted with acrylic paints.  I chose a light color branch to make it stand out from the blue background.  Most of the larger cherry blossom flowers have vibrant red cherry blossom or leaf patterns to contrast with the bright blue background.  Each of the red cherry blossoms have a unique cut for the stamen.  I layered smaller paper cherry blossom cuts over the larger flowers.  I also glued sparkly Swarovski yellow crystals to accent the entire painting at the very end.  All the paper cherry blossoms were glued onto the wood frame panel.

Inspiration for Red Cherry Blossom Branch Paper Cut Painting
I was inspired to do my own paper cutting version of a cherry blossom painting when I visited Washington D.C. last year in the summer.  I missed the National Cherry Blossom Festival in April but I was still able to see the beautiful cherry blossom artwork of Junko Yamada of Jackson Heights, NY.  She designed the 2010 National Cherry Blossom Festival Artwork.  She combines the modern capitol buildings with traditional Japanese cherry blossom rice paper art.  Her collages are composed of thousands of pieces of fine paper in the tradition of “Harie,” an ancient style of Japanese art.  My favorite is her pink cherry blossom tree in front of the Jefferson monument.  I love the way she uses different textures and shades of rice paper to create shadows on the tree and layers on the cherry blossom flower.  I created my own version of a mixed media cherry blossom painting with a more 2-dimensional vibrant red festive feel.
